From a very young age Carmen Vella Gauci was always interested in drawing and doodling. Fast forward the years and she started attending lessons under various tutors, namely Alfred Briffa, Matthew Cassar, Anton Calleja and Winston Hassell. For a brief period she stopped painting to raise her kids, however now that they are older she’s back doing what she loves most, painting with verve.

Carmen began her career using watercolour and ink but soon realised she wanted brighter colours and bolder strokes. Fast forward a few years and she began to experiment with oils and acrylics but soon realized acrylics were the right medium for her, they were fast drying and provided the intensity she was looking for.

Carmen is inspired by all that is around her, she defines herself as a sensitive soul, a compulsive, energy releasing artist, and uses her art as a vehicle to transfer her emotions, namely her fears, doubts and happiness onto canvas.  A number of her works exhibited are inspired by her contact with people with special needs, as well as people with mental health issues. The second part of her exhibition is dedicated towards Malta’s dwindling natural habitat, the boom in the building industry leaving  less green areas and open spaces. The feeling of over crowdedness. The two topics of mental health and dwindling natural habitat go hand in hand and are linked in this exhibition.

This is Carmen’s first solo exhibition and is entitled: Perfectly Imperfect.  We live in a society where everyone wants to look their best, want to impress, yet their need to be accepted and fit in makes it all so perfectly imperfect.

Through her exhibition Carmen wishes to convey a message, to educate, and foster knowledge amongst others.
